A new initiative on the VJH Women’s and Children’s Health Services unit is turning…pages!
Pediatrician Dr. Kathryn MacKinlay with the help of the wonderful WCHS nurses decided to use admissions as an opportunity to promote early literacy and offer an alternative to TV’s and parents’ screens for children who are recovering in the hospital. Each child admitted to the unit gets a daily choice of a book to keep and take home. The books help children to pass the time, keeping them entertained as well as furthering their reading abilities while they are in hospital.
Sponsors of the initiative were the VJH Foundation and the Okanagan Learning Foundation. Support was also received from the Okanagan Regional Library for a curated list of popular books, and from Mosaic Books in Kelowna who provided a discounted purchase rate.
