Through the Facility Engagement Departmental Interdepartmental Enrichment Activity, Dr. Jennifer Procyshen took the lead gathering 21 physicians who met to review Carbetocin use for obstetrics as well as to facilitate interaction between the departments of Women’s and Children’s Health Services and Anesthesia.
One of the objectives of the meeting was to help improve communication between the two departments and to encourage interaction outside of the hospital setting. Also, discussions occurred at this event, which encouraged comradery between the groups resulting in improved hospital culture.
A journal article review was presented by Dr. Tilly Buys, regarding Carbetocin use at the time of elective and emergency caesarean section. Multiple articles and Cochrane reviews including the side effect profiles between Oxytocin and Carbetocin, the differences in the effectiveness of improving uterine tone/decreasing blood loss and the cost comparison for both drugs, were reviewed.
Dr. Noha Fossen also reviewed the literature regarding the use of Carbetocine at the time of vaginal delivery, which is limited in literature, as well as the differences of Carbetocin use at time of elective versus emergency caesarean section. It was felt there are limited studies regarding its use at the time of vaginal delivery, and at the time of the emergency caesarean section, higher doses of Carbetocin may be needed.
